Tree
Lizard
Urosaurus ornatus
Body length: 1 1/2 - 2 1/4"
Diet: Insects and spiders
Tree lizards might just as appropriately be called "rock lizards". At
Tonto National Monument, as in many other areas, they are most commonly seen on
boulders and cliffs, including the walls of the cliff dwellings.
Tree lizards are generally drab-colored, blending easily into their surroundings.
However, during the breeding season (spring and following the summer rains) male
tree lizards can be seen out doing "push-ups" with all four legs. These
push-ups flash the male's bright blue undersides, advertising his availability
to potential mates.
