Phrynosoma douglasii

Body length: 1 3/4 - 4 1/4"
Diet: Arthropods, including ants and spiders

While the regal horned lizard is a confirmed desert dweller, short-horned lizards are generally found at higher elevations in southern Arizona. Their habitat is variable, and includes grasslands, oak woodlands, and pine forests.

The species has been reported, but never confirmed, at Tonto National Monument. Short-horned lizards have been collected near the Monument in areas of oak woodland, at elevations slightly higher than occur here. However, this species can be easily confused with the regal horned lizard. A voucher specimen or good photograph is needed to verify its presence in the Monument.
