Leaves: dark green, smooth, oval to heart-shaped; to 4" long

Elevation: 2500 - 6500'
Habitat: roadsides, open sandy areas, and mesas
Plant forms a rounded clump, appearing almost shrublike. Flowers open in late
afternoon, wither the next morning. The large root was chewed or powdered by
Native Americans and applied as a poultice for various ailments. An infusion
in water was used to appease the appetite.
