Upper Cliff
Dwelling Tours
Tours to the 40-room Upper Cliff Dwelling
take place between November and April. Group size is limited to 15 people, so
reservations are required. There is no extra fee for the tour.
Open House
The Upper Cliff Dwelling is usually only accessible by guided tour. However,
for one weekend in November, and another in March, it is possible to do the
hike without a guide.
Talks/Programs/Off-Site Hikes
Throughout the winter months, park staff give talks on subjects such as
wild foods of the Sonoran Desert, making string from desert plants, etc. Occasionally,
there will be a program by a researcher or special visitor. In the past, these
have included talks on rattlesnakes and Harris' hawks. There are no regular
schedules for these programs.
Park rangers
occasionally lead hikes to archeological sites in the surrounding area. Tour
sizes are limited, so reservations are required.
Research Projects
There are several
research projects underway, so it is possible you may see a gila monster or
rattlesnake being weighed and measured during your visit. Feel free to ask questions!
Evening Programs/Hikes
Due to their location, Tonto National Monument and the surrounding area are
ideal for studying the night sky. Occasionally, we will schedule an evening
hike to the Lower Cliff Dwelling, the Upper
Cliff Dwelling, or an evening program at one of the nearby Forest Service campgrounds.
There are no regular schedules for these programs.
For reservations, or for more information on upcoming programs, call (928) 467-2241.
