This tool was used to spin cotton fibers into thread. The whorl (the flat disc) would have been rubbed back and forth on the thigh. The thread could be used for sewing, or woven into cloth on a loom, using the batten.

Yucca or agave fibers could also be spun into thread to make sandals and skirts, but a different tool, the spinning stick, was probably used for that.
