Bowls
These bowls were made of clay,
a design was painted on, and they were baked in a hot fire. The Salado
did not use a wheel when making pottery;
instead they used the coil method, smoothing out the wet clay with a wooden paddle
or small pebble. Paint came from minerals or plants, and brushes were made from
yucca leaves, small sticks, or hair. The bowl
on the left is Tonto Polychrome and dates from AD 1350-1450. The bowl on the right
is Gila/Tonto Polychrome and dates from the same time period.
Some archeologists think that because these bowls were painted, they were not
used every day. They may have been made for a ceremony. Other items made from
clay are the animal head, small
pot, and ladle.
