A batten is used during weaving. The broad side separates the vertical warp threads, and the thinner edge presses the horizontal weft threads into place. Weaving tools are usually made of wood, and highly polished to keep the threads from snagging. To see more tools used to make cloth, check out the spindle and spinning stick. To see items the Salado wove, check out the shirt, skirt, and breechcloth. Archeologists believe that men were the weavers in Salado society, because weaving tools are often buried with them.
