In late 2004, the Timucuan Preserve received funding from the National Park Service to rehabilitate the roof on one of the slave cabins. Research was undertaken to complete the design of the rehabilitated roof and the tabby walls, using nineteenth and twentieth century photographs as well as documents from the Historic American Buildings Survey from the 1930s. The project includes replacing the roof frame and shingles to match historic period construction to recreate an accurate appearance to the building and to prevent further deterioration to the fragile tabby walls. Park preservation team members removed the old roof in December 2004, and are currently rebuilding the roof.
In recognition of Black History Month, a member of the preservation team will present a preservation program at the Slave Quarters on Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 p.m. For more information on this program and the preservation project, copy and paste this address into your web browser and hit "enter": http://www.nps.gov/timu/indepth/news/sq%20rehab/sq_rehab.htm
