In May 1775, Thomas packed a round trunk like the one you see at the foot of the bed and headed to Philadelphia. It was there that the question of independence was to be debated. He, like a majority of the colonists, hoped for a peaceful reconciliation with Great Britain. He had to consider the colonies' prospects in trying to revolt from the world's Superpower - a nation with which most colonists still identified themselves and upon which they were economically dependent. Thomas also had to consider his family's future. If he joined the revolution and the colonies lost; he would be put to death for treason, and his large family stripped of their wealth. All of this had to weigh heavily on his mind the morning he left this room to help decide the fate of a nation.
