WALKING TOURS
There are three different walking tours offered through the Site. A guided tour
is available for groups of six or more who make reservations at least three
weeks in advance.
- Allentown: A National Preservation
District that includes homes, churches and other structures dating from the
early 19th century to the early 20th century. Architecturally, Allentown is
the most eclectic area in the city with styles ranging from Federal (1814)
to Colonial Revival (1926) and everything in between. The tour covers three
miles and takes about two hours at a good pace. Allentown is also home to
many restaurants, antique and specialty shops housed in the old homes.
- Delaware Avenue: Once known
as "Millionaire's Row," Delaware Avenue was the place to live in
Buffalo at the turn of the twentieth century. Elegant mansions lined both
sides of "the Avenue" while stately elm trees formed a canopy over it. Unfortunately,
all of the trees and most of the mansions are gone now except for a few blocks
north of the Site where the grandeur is still present. The tour covers one
and a half to two miles (including several side streets) and takes about an
hour and a half to complete.
- Downtown Buffalo:
One of two tours that does not begin at the Site. This tour begins about a
mile south of the Site at the Lafayette Square Soldiers and Sailors Monument
in the center of downtown. The focus of this tour is the growth and development
of Buffalo from a small village to world renown city, from the industrial
decline of the mid-20th century, to the revitalization of the 1980's. Allow
about two to three hours.
