Historic
Barn Dance and Holiday Activities at the Preserve
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve announces the schedule of
activities surrounding the July 04 holiday weekend.
Saturday, July 1 - Ranching Independence
Day Activities, Wagon Rides, and Barn Dance
| 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. |
Ride in a covered wagon
on the open prairie throughout the day. Rides occur approximately
every 20 - 30 minutes. Watch wool spinning demonstrations
from days gone by and listen to old time live music in the
limestone barn throughout the day. |
| 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. |
Learn about early cooking
techniques as the women of the ranch prepare a meal using
open flame, Dutch ovens, and the ranch cook stove. |
| 11 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. |
Special interpretive program
on traditional cooking methods. |
| 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. |
Watch history come alive
when characters from the past enjoy a ranch-cooked meal as
they discuss the upcoming holiday activities. |

Children's games from
yesteryear. Refreshments served. |
| 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. |
Enjoy an old-fashioned
barn dance featuring live music by the Tallgrass Express in
the 1880s limestone barn. Refreshment s served. |

Children's Games

Visit with living history
interpreters as they go about their daily ranching activities
and prepare for the holiday celebration |

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is a public/private partnership
with the National Park Service, The Nature Conservancy, and the
Kansas Park Trust. Located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas
State Highway 177 (the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway), Tallgrass
Prairie National Preserve is open daily from 9 a.m. until 4:30
p.m. except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. For more
