An archeological resource is any object that is more than one hundred years old and evidence of human activity. Most archeology deals with objects below the earths surface. Archeologists weave a story from objects they find by combining information gleaned from the objects themselves, the spatial relationships between objects and the historical record. Several archeological surveys at Stones River National Battlefield have added fascinating details to the story of the battle and the ensuing Union occupation.
In order to preserve archeological resources that have not been investigated, the National Park Service prohibits the possession or use of metal detectors on park property. Any digging or damage caused by attempts to illegally remove archeological resources may result in fines of $10,000 or more and possible jail time.
