OVERVIEW

Jessie Jackson:  America’s democracy was not born July 4, 1776.  American democracy was born in Selma in 1965. 
 
Richie Jean Jackson:  I think Selma was God’s chosen place.

John Lewis:  The Voting Rights Act was literally written on the highway between Selma and Montgomery.

Timothy Mays:  If we had not came across this bridge 40 years ago, there would be a wall in Germany.

Coretta Scott King:  The freedom we won here was purchased with the precious blood of martyrs.

Mark Gilmore:  People died that you could have this right.

Tarana Burke:  You need to come here and understand that this is sacred, this is a sacred place.

Synethia Perkins Pettaway:  I look at the Edmund Pettus Bridge as being holy ground.

Tarana Burke:  Selma to me is the heart of democracy, the cradle of democracy.
