19th Century Stone: Family Tombs
Family Tombs (circa 1860)
The first family tomb in St. Paul's Cemetery was that of the Drake family built sometime before 1829. In 1835, to obtain legal right to the ground where they had already built their vault, the Drakes paid St. Paul's Church $1. By the 1860's, plots for subterranean vaults, such as those pictured at right, were selling for more than $200. Coffins and urns for cremated remains were stacked on shelves.
