19th Century Stones: Daniel Winship
|
|
| Daniel Winship (1768-1854) The weeping willow tree and cinerary urn, classical symbols of mourning imported from Europe during America's federal period, embellish Winship's marble stone. In St. Paul's Church cemetery, as in cemeteries throughout American, these symbols entirely replaced death heads and soul effigies--the designs of native stonecutters--by the early 19th century. |
