19th Century Stone: Philomon Fowler
Philomon Fowler (1782-1861)
Fowler's marble grave marker, which displays the Masonic emblem, square and compasses enclosing the letter "G" (God/Geometry), is an example of those mid19th century stones which bear symbols of the acheivement or status of the deceased. A social and religious fraternal order, the Masons were an enormously influential organization in the 19th century; their membership included a considerable number of the nation's political and business leaders. Philomon Fowler operated an inn near St. Paul's Church. In 1798 a spacious room was fitted up at the inn for a Masonic Lodge.
