19th Century Stone: Samuel Nelson
Samuel Nelson (1793-1867) This limestone marker bears the following epitaph: FOR THIRTY YEARS ATTACHED TO THE FAMILY OF JOHN GRIGG. In 1837 Nelson knocked on the door of John Grigg, who lived across the road from St. Paul's church. He was seeking assistance during his flight from slavery. Samuel Nelson remained in Eastchester for the next 30 years, marrying and raising a family. He worked as a gravedigger in St. Paul's churchyard. The Sexton's Book indicates that he was paid with items such as suspenders, fish hooks, candy, and a bottle of beer.
