Civil War Stone: Joseph Gallaudet
Joseph Gallaudet (1838-1889) served in the 6th New York Heavy Artillery, enlisting from Mt. Vernon in August, 1862. Corporal Gallaudet was wounded at the "bloody angle" at the the Battle of Spottsylvania Courthouse in May, 1864. He was treated at a field hospital, but returned home to recover. On July 24, he wrote to the Army surgeon's office from his home in Tuckahoe, requesting additional leave to nurse his wounds, which were "still very painful, having had two pieces of iron extracted a few days ago, which still keeps me on crutches." The request was granted, although army records actually reported him as having deserted his unit in August, 1864. He eventually returned to the 6th and participated in the siege of Petersburng. Gallaudet also was part of the regiment's occupation of Petersburg after the Confederates surrendered.
