19th Century Stone: Farrington family
Farrington family (circa 1880)
St. Paul's Cemetery has several monuments in the shape of obelisks, objects common in ancient Egypt. Most of St. Paul's obelisks date from the 1870's and 1880's. They reflect the Western World's fascination with ancient Egypt that was sparked by French Emperor Napoleon's occupation of that North African country at the beginning of the 19th century. Two striking examples of this trend are the Washington Monument (erected 1848-1884) and the transportation of Cleopatra's Needle, a 69 foot, 220 ton obelisk, from Egypt to New York City's Central Park in 1880.
