18th Century Stone: Caleb Morgan
Caleb Morgan (1718-1803)
Remarriage upon the death of a spouse was common in 18th century Eastchester because economic survival often depended upon the participation of both husband and wife. The stones of his two wives flank Caleb's Morgan's sandstone marker. After Abigail died at age 54, Caleb married Isabella, a widow. In his will Caleb left Isabella "all the furniture which is remained of what she brought with her at the time of our marriage." The will demonstrates that husbands acquired their wives' property at marriage. A widow retained control of 1/3 of her husband's property, unless she remarried. The epitaph at the bottom of Caleb's stone admonishes passersby to remember their mortality.
