19th Century Stone: Belinda Shute
|
|
| Belinda Shute (1814-1842) The willow tree and temple-like tomb on Belinda Shute's marble stone are neo-classical symbols of mourning which emerged after the American Revolution. In St. Paul's Cemetery these symbols are not seen until the 19th century. The introduction of a classically robed mourning figure on Belinda's stone shifts the focus from the deceased to those left behind. |
