Building Friendship: Reports by John Monaghan

September 2000: Rigging the Mizzen Shrouds and Stays

As Friendship sat patiently at her moorings over the past year or so, work went on in the rigging shed to make up her shrouds and stays. Her shrouds are made from 4-stranded Kevlar, about 3 inches in diameter. A loop or "bight" is formed in the middle of the shroud line. Along this "bight", the shrouds were "wormed, parceled, and served" to make them more wear resistant.

Before the shrouds were installed, a final step was to paint the shrouds to make them waterproof.
