 THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

On February 14, 1949, the Castle of San Felipe del Morro, San Cristóbal, the Fortress of San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo, and the walls of San Juan were nominated the "San Juan National Historic Site".

The decree which nominated the Castles of San Juan a National Park established:

-That this historic site, an object of national importance, should serve for the benefit and enjoyment of the    people who visit them.
- The protection of these old fortifications as monuments of the past, for their historical and architectural value for the interest of our nation.

The National Park Service is composed of various divisions whose primary mission is to preserve and conserve our Castles for the enjoyment of our visitors.

These Divisions are:

Visitor Services:     

    a. Interpretation

    b. Protection

    c. Fee Collection

-Administration

-Maintenance

-Spanish Colonial Research Center and Military Archives

The Division of Interpretation is in charge of providing information, conduct tours and educational programs to the general public and to schools.
