Spanish American War

 WORLD HERITAGE

On December 6, 1983, the Castles of Old San Juan, together with La Fortaleza, were included in the list of World Heritage Sites. This internationally recognized award elevated the historical monuments of the city of San Juan to the same level as the pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China and Machu Picchu in Perú. The United Nations, through the Congress of World Heritage, has mandated that the loss of these monuments would be irreparable, both for the local and the international community, due to their cultural nature and the legacy which they represent to present and future generations. This designation induces a great national pride, but also a great responsibility; the obligation to preserve, protect and interpret them for the benefit of society. Of the more than 365 American National Parks, only 12 have been included in the select and exclusive list of World Heritage Sites!
