THE FORT OF SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ (1610).....
El CAÑUELO
The Fort of San Juan de la Cruz, also known as "El Cañuelo, is a small Fortress situated to the west of San Juan Bay on Isla de Cabras. It was built to help control the estuary of the Bayamón River and thus close the channel between Palo Seco and Isla de Cabras to enemy shipping. The first construction was of wood, but this was burnt during the Dutch attack in 1625. It was rebuilt in stone in its present form, square shaped with walls fifty feet long and fifteen feet high. It has flat roof which serves as an artillery platform for up to 18 cannon, which may be directed to fire from all four sides.
