Spring Street School Activity 2/11/05

Students from Friday Harbor's Spring Street School on consecutive Fridays in February weeded, then planted native grass plugs in a test plot on the American Camp prairie. The activity is part of the park's long-range plan to eliminate exotic species from the prairie and replace them with native grasses such as Roemer's fescue. The grasses were cultivated starting last August from seeds gathered from the prairie by National Park Service biologists. The park prepared several plots via prescribed fire and/or herbacides in spring 2004. The students will monitor their plot--prepared with herbacides and fire--throughout the year. In the above photographs (top to bottom, left to right) the students lay out plug tubes in planting order, then dig holes about a foot deep. The plug is carefully extracted from the tube and nestled in the hole. For more information, contact Bill Gleason, chief of resource management at (360)378-2240 or bill_gleason@nps.gov.
