The Sagamore Hill National Historic Site is seeking to fill the following position for the summer season. The positions are intended to run from mid-May to Labor Day.

RECRUITMENT BULLETIN: R.B. #SAHI-C-01

POSITION, TITLE, SERIES, AND GRADE: Seasonal Park Guide, GS-0303-04 ($23,417 per annum)

LOCATION: Sagamore Hill National Historic Site,20 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, NY 11771.

This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours per year. The entire length of the appointment is not guaranteed. Incumbents are required to work weekends and holidays and must wear the National Park Service Uniform.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Conducts interpretive tours of a historic house museum and walking tours of the park grounds. Presents programs for varied audiences of differing ages and backgrounds. Responsible for the safety of visitors and employees through identification, reporting and correcting of safety hazards when possible.

Collects admission fees for tours of the Theodore Roosevelt home. Operates cash register, handles monies and maintains records for tour fees and retail sales for a small bookstore.
Operates information desk and provides routine information about the site and services in the neighboring communities. Recognizes and reports violations of park regulations. Operates two-way radio equipment and performs routine first aid.

Opens and closes facilities, ensuring that established security measures are carried out. Completes reports of accidents, lost and found property and visitation statistics.
Duties involve prolonged standing and sitting, routine climbing of stairs in an non-air conditioned Victorian-style home. Other duties include walking tours on paved surfaces and nature trails. Park Guides assist handicapped visitors with entry to park structures. Other tasks and duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

1. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

2. Basic knowledge or understanding of American History during Theodore Roosevelt's lifetime (Civil War to World War I).

3. Skill in researching and organizing facts and historic events into oral presentations, and guided walks or tours.

4. Skill or ability to operate cash registers and conduct retail transactions.
