After years of planning and anticipation, community members, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, and National Park Service officials wished the 1895 NHL schooner C.A. Thayer a hearty bon voyage at 7:30am on Tuesday, December 2, 2003. Amid well-wishes and song, Ms. Pelosi and Park Superintendent Kate Richardson cast off the final mooring, sending the vessel on a two-year "voyage of restoration." Schoolchildren from John Baldwin Elementary (who had spent the night aboard another of the Park's NHL vessels, as part of a popular environmental living program) and Park Ranger Peter Kasin offered C. A. Thayer heartfelt musical farewells. The vessel will be essentially disassembled down to sound material. Her keel will be straightened and rehabilitated, and then she will be built back up again using new materials in the exact form and manner of her original construction. C.A. Thayer's repair is expected to take two years, during which time the project's progress will be tracked in the Park (with exhibits and panels) and on the web, and regular tours of the vessel will be offered to the public.
