Santa Fe Trail Site Description
Comanche National Grassland Exhibits at sites along Highway 350, between La Junta and Trinidad, provide a look at Trail life. Visible ruts can be found at this site. There is a sheltered picnic area near the town of Timpas, Colorado. The USDA Forest Service manages the Comanche National Grassland.
Iron Spring and Timpas Stage Station Iron Spring is 11 miles west of Timpas, Colorado on US Highway 350, and then 1 mile south on a gravel road. It was an important water supply on the Trail and ruts are still visible near the spring. Timpas served as a stage station and a few building remains are nearby. This site was the scene of several Indian attacks.
