Mahaffie Farmstead 31K
Photo Link
Tiny logo of the Santa Fe Trail. The Mahaffie Farmstead is located on the north edge of the city of Olathe at 1100 Kansas City Road. The farmstead was a stage station on the road from Westport, and dinners were served in the basement of the house. The two-story native limestone house was constructed in 1865 and is the only known Santa Fe Trail station that is open to the public. It is owned and operated by the city of Olathe.
Lone Elm Campground 29K
Photo Link
Three miles south of Olathe on Lone Elm Road, on the main branch of the Santa Fe Trail, this was the site of a spring (now enclosed in a small well) and excellent grazing for livestock. The spring was a major campsite for Trail travelers. As time progressed, the "Elm Grove" was cut down by the travelers for firewood, resulting in the name "Lone Elm." Eventually the last tree was also cut down but the name endured.
Lanesfield School Historic Site Tiny logo of the Santa Fe Trail. The Lanesfield School Historic Site is at 18745 S. Dillie Road. From I-35, exit at Gardner (#210), then turn right onto Main Street and proceed straight onto 175th Street. Go 3 miles to Dillie Road and turn left. Continue 1.5 miles to get to the site. Lanesfield provided services to Santa Fe Trail travelers in the Trail's final days. The Trail may have crossed the property prior to the school's construction.
