Welcome Message

Spring 2006

The National Park Service is currently seeking public comment on the Draft Elk and Vegetation Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. The public comment process helps the NPS determine if the draft plan/EIS is thorough, accurate, and adequately addresses environmental and economic issues.

The National Park Service and partners in adjacent areas have prepared a draft plan/EIS for the management of elk and vegetation within Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The purpose of this plan/EIS is to guide management actions in the park to reduce the impacts of elk on vegetation and habitats. The goal is to restore, to the extent possible, the natural range of variability in the elk population and affected plant and animal communities. The plan/EIS analyzes a range of alternatives to manage elk and vegetation within Rocky Mountain National Park and assesses the impacts that could result from continuing current management framework (Alternative 1) or implementing the four action alternatives.

This website explains the elk and vegetation management plan. It provides an overview of the issues associated with elk and vegetation management in the park and neighboring areas, and outlines the EIS process. The webpages describe future activities and how you can stay involved and contribute to an effective planning process.

Your input is important to a successful management plan, and you are encouraged to submit comments on the draft plan/EIS. Visit the Public Involvement page of this website to obtain information on how to submit your comments and when comments must be submitted for consideration. This page also provides the schedule of public meetings with locations and times.

Visit the Planning page of this website for a link to the electronic version of the draft plan/EIS and to submit your comments electronically.

Understanding the interests and priorities of you, the public, is an important part of the planning and environmental impact statement process. I welcome and encourage your continued participation in this planning process and look forward to your input on the draft plan/EIS.

Vaughn L. Baker, Superintendent
Rocky Mountain National Park
