Ranger Led Programs for August

This month, programs take place at one of the following locations:

• Nature Center (NC) 5200 Glover Road, NW (off Military Rd.), 202-895-6070. Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.
• Old Stone House (OSH) 3051 M Street, NW (in Georgetown), 202-426-6851. Hours: Daily, 12:00-5:00 PM.
• Peirce Barn (PB) Tilden and Beach Drive, 202-282-0927. Hours: Saturday & Sunday, 12:00-4:00 PM.
• Military Field (MF) The field near Picnic Groves #13 & #14, off of Military Road, 202-895-6070.

Wednesday, August 2
  • 4:00 PM @NC Young Planetarium This introduction to the night sky is for the youngest of astronomers and is a shortened version of our Night Sky Planetarium Program. Ages 2 to 10.

    Thursday, August 3
  • 4:00 PM @NC Owl Pellets What do the owls eat in Rock Creek Park? Assist a park ranger in uncovering the mystery of owl cuisine while dissecting owl pellets. Ages 5 and up.

    Friday, August 4
  • 4:00 PM @NC Creature Feature Get acquainted with the Nature Center’s live animals and assist a park ranger in their feeding. All ages.

    Saturday, August 5
  • 10:00 AM @DO Dumbarton Oaks Tour Join a park ranger to discover the trails of this naturalistic landscaped garden turned public park, and learn of Beatrix Ferrand, the pioneering 20th century landscape architect who designed it. Please dress appropriately and bring water Ages 8 and older.
  • 1:00 PM@NC Summer Night Sky Visit the only planetarium in the National Park system and explore the wonders of the night sky. View the brightest stars, planets, and constellations of August and learn their stories. Ages 4 to 12.
  • 2:00 PM @ NC Scavenger Hunt Search for and discover the incredible resources in the forest of Rock Creek Park on this ranger led scavenger hunt. All ages.
  • 4:00 PM @NC Exploring the Universe Join us for a series of planetarium programs exploring the universe. Topics for these programs include the sun, moon, stars, planets, and other space phenomena. Ages 7 and older.

    Sunday, August 6
  • 11:00 AM @NC A Bugs Life Join a park ranger on an exploratory hike into the realm of insects and spiders and discover how important their role is in nature while participating in an insect craft. Ages 5-10.
  • 1:00 PM @NC Summer Night Sky See the program description for Saturday, August 5th.
  • 2:00 PM @ PB Walking in Roosevelt’s Footsteps Enjoy a moderate 2-mile hike on the Theodore Roosevelt and Valley trails and discover the scenery and tranquility that America’s 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, sought and found in Rock Creek Park. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Ages 8 and up.

    Thursday, August 10
  • 4:00 PM @ NC What’s the Buzz? Come learn all about bees: where they live, what they do, and why they buzz. You will be able to see the bees that live at the Nature Center. Ages 6 and older.

    Saturday, August 12
  • 10:00 AM @OSH Black Georgetown Hike Join a park ranger for a walking tour of historic Herring Hill, a Georgetown neighborhood that holds reminders of the vibrant African-American community that thrived in the 19th century. Ages 8 and older.
  • 11:00 AM @ NC The Web of Life Join a park ranger on a ½ mile hike and discover the fragile connections between the soil, plants, tress and animals that make up the forestland of Rock Creek Park. Ages 7 and up.

    Sunday, August 13
  • 10:00 AM @PB Riverwalk Experience a part of the park closed to traffic on the weekends. Enjoy the beauty of Rock Creek's rapids on this relatively flat, 3-mile walk to Military Road and back. Ages 7 and older.
  • 10:30 AM @NC Where the Wild Things Aren’t Walk where bears, mountain lion, buffalo and wolves once roamed on this 2-mile hike and discover why these animal no longer can be found in Rock Creek Park. Ages 8 and up.

  • 4:00 PM @NC Barking Up the Right Tree! Learn the secrets of tree identification while looking at different tree bark and creating bark rubbings. Please bring water. Ages 7 and older.

  • 2:00 PM @OSH How to Build an Old Stone House Discover how this 240 year old building was meticulously constructed while learning about the colonial tradesmen who painstakingly built it. All ages.

    Sunday, August 20
  • 10:00 AM @PB Bike Hike Join a park ranger as we explore Rock Creek Park up to Boundary Bridge. Bring your own bike and water; helmets required. Ages 10 and older.

  • 4:00 PM @NC A Closer Look at the Sun Look through a special telescope to get an intimate look at Earth’s nearest star, the Sun. Learn about sun spots, flares, and other solar phenomena. Ages 7 and up.

  • 10:00 AM @OSH By The Dawn’s Early Light Join a park ranger on a tour through historic Georgetown to Francis Scott Key Park. Discover how the burning of the City of Washington by the British led to the writing of our nation's anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Ages 7 and older.
  • 1:00 PM @NC Summer Night Sky See the program description for Saturday, August 5th.
  • 2:00 PM @ OSH Old Stone House Garden Tour Explore the lush greenery of the Old Stone House garden and learn of the multiple uses of plants and herbs that were used during the colonial days. All ages.
  • 4:00 PM @NC Exploring the Universe> See the program description for Saturday, August 5th.
  • 8:30 PM @MF Exploring the Sky Come see the stars! Join the National Park Service and members of the National Capital Astronomers in Rock Creek Park to view the stars, planets, and other night sky phenomena with telescopes. All ages. Rain cancels this event.

  • 4:00 PM @NC SSSSnakes! Meet Houdina, the Nature Center’s resident corn snake and learn about the intriguing lives of the snakes that live in Rock Creek Park. Make your own snake. All ages.
