Biological Sciences Technician (VIP)
(Exotic Plant Control)

This volunteer position is located in the Division of Resource
Management at the South Operations Center in Orick, 45 minutes
north of Arcata. The volunteer works under the Exotic Plant
Control Specialist (Biological Technician) and assists with
control of exotic species 20-40 hours in a given week.
Major Duties:
- Assists with implementation exotic plant control projects
park wide. Participates with park labor crew, YCC, CCC
and volunteers. Keeps record of control activities.
- Maps locations of exotic plant infestations. Maps
locations where exotic plants have been removed.
- Photographs exotic plant infestations and removal
activities and designated photo points.
- Drives government vehicles to field sites as needed.
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to hike into the back country and to walk and
work on uneven, often steep, ground.
- Ability to carry and use exotic plant removal tools and
equipment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive light 2-wheel
and 4-wheel drive trucks.
- Ability to identify flowering plants would be helpful.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily outdoors in pastures, natural
grasslands, deciduous woodlands and conifer forest. Much
of the park is mountainous and steep. Work takes place
under a wide variety of weather conditions.
- Risks may include insect stings and bites, exposure to
poison oak, poisonous snakes, heat, cold, rain or snow
during field work. Record-keeping is done primarily in an
office setting.
