Glossary of Terms


Carapace - Upper part of the turtle's shell.

CL - Carapace Length.

Cloaca - The chamber into which the digestive, urinary and reproductive systems empty, opening to the outside through the anus.

Diurnal - Active during daytime hours.

Dorsolateral Fold - Pertainig to the area at the juncture of the back and side.

Fen - Low, flat, swampy land.

Fossorial - Adapted to digging or burrowing.

Marginal Scutes - Located on the edge of the turtle's carpace.

Medial - Relating to or situated in or extending toward the middle.

Mesic Forest - Mesic Forests occur on sites with impeded drainage, or where this is an abundance of water.

Nocturnal - Active at night.

Plastron - Lower part of the turtle's shell.

Posterior - Located at or torward the rear end of the body.

SVL - Snout Vent Length.

Terrestrial - Living on land.

TL - Total length.

Tympanum - The eardrum.
