Mediterranean and Italian Renaissance
Revival (1920 - 1940)

Constructed as a barracks on the Main Post in 1912, Building 35 exemplifies Mediterranean style at the Presidio (photo taken 1919).

The Mediterranean Revival evolved from a rekindled love for the Italian Renaissance palace. By the turn of the century, prominent architects were now designing buildings with the grand but refined look of 16th century palaces, while incorporating the advantages of the new building construction technology. Building 35 is a great example of the Army Quartermasters' interpretation of the Mediterranean Revival, with its large, boxy shape that could accommodate many different building uses, simple stuccoed exterior, flat roof and decorative horizontal frieze.

Building 35 as it appears today. Note enclosure of downstairs porch and removal of second story porches.
