Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Habitat: Ocean bluffs and and coastal hillsides. Frequents serpentine soils at the Presidio.

General Distribution: Coastal areas of central California.

Description: This perennial plant grows one to two tall with herbaceous stems originating at a woody base. The gum plant is somewhat resinous, particularly the flower head. The fairly thick leaves have fine sawtoothed edges. The flower is daisy-like and yellow, and the buds are topped by a drop of gummy material. Blooming time is August to September. This taxa has a more erect form than its close relatives.

Monitoring and Activities: The populations of San Francisco gumplant were last counted in 1999, and its numbers have been stable to increasing over recent years. Click to see graph of population changes.
