What: A dasher is the pole seen at the top of a butter churn. The part of the dasher inside the butter churn has some type of crossed pieces at the end. The dasher was lifted up and pushed down again to mix up or agitate the cream to make butter. As all the butter fats joined together, it became more work to churn. Churning butter was one of the many chores that children helped with at Pipe Spring. Who: The pioneers used the butter churn. Many pioneers made their own butter, especially if they had cows that were milked. See the dasher and butter churn in action. 263kb Quicktime movie |
