Toaster

This is a hand-held wire toaster.

What: A wire toaster was used to make toast. The bread was held between the two sides of the end. A person would hold the wooden handle as the bread cooked over the fire. In 1895, a person could order a wire toaster by mail from the Montgomery Ward catalog for 5¢ each or 12 for 45¢. If you didn't want burnt toast, you would have to very carefully toast your bread.

The other toaster pictured was a later version and is similar to ones campers use today by the campfire.

Who: The pioneers used these toasters.

This a later type of toaster.
