Candle Mold

Candle mold with hand made candles.

What: A candle mold was used when making candles. As you can see by the number of holes in the top, six candles could be poured all at the same time. This helped to speed the process and make candles that were uniform in size. Today, candles are made of parafin wax. In pioneer days, tallow from animal fat was used for making candles These did not have the nice smell of today's candles.

The second picture shows the tapering of the candle at the top. These types of candles are called tapers because of the narrowing or tapering from the bottom of the candle to the top.

The bottom picture shows the holes where the wicks were pulled through before pouring the candles.

Who: Pioneers used candle molds, though the use of candle molds began long before the pioneers.
