·       Fourth in size among the Great Lakes, it covers 9,940 square miles (25,745 square kilometers).  Lake Erie is the only Great Lake whose bottom is above sea level.

Deepest depth....................210 feet (64 meters) near Buffalo

Mean...................................................90 feet (27.4 meters)

Average of lake's west end...........................35 feet (10.7m)

·       Width and Length:

Widest point..............................................58 miles (93km)

Narrowest point.........................................28 miles (45km)

Length...................................................240 miles (384km)

·       There are 262 miles of shoreline in Ohio, including 41 miles along the Lake Erie Islands.

·       There are approximately 26 islands in the western end of the lake (that area west of Cedar Point).  The exact number varies, depending on definition, lake level, etc.  A majority lies on the U.S. side of the border.

·       The islands were formed as a result of glacial action. The limestone base was formed from skeletons and shells of marine organisms.  Limestone bedrock is the source of many caves on South Bass Island.
