| Abstract |
Two rock art sites, both on USDA Forest Service land, share certain characteristics, notably a blocky rock structure, fairly exposed cliff surfaces, a southern aspect, a river-side location on a trail that leads to thermal springs, and thick pigment sufficient for AMS radiocarbon dates and physical analyses. Yet the sites were subjected to different kinds of visitation in historic times; Gibson Bridge in Montana was on a trail that experienced only moderate foot and occasional horse traffic, whereas Paint Rock in North Carolina was on a road that experienced heavy coach traffic and massive livestock drives. Occasional historic period visitations to Gibson Bridge most likely account for the virtual absence of human damage, whereas pronounced human presence at Paint Rock resulted in heavy graffiti and fire damage. The only panel at Paint Rock that escaped human damage is one that was never noticed by visitors. As both sites are well known to the visiting public, they cannot be closed. Nonetheless, to draw attention to the only surviving panel at Paint Rock would be courting disaster. The recommended management strategy at Gibson Bridge is to install interpretive pedestals in front of the main panels, whereas no mention of rock art at Paint Rock would be the preferred strategy. These case studies show that instead of automatically applying general conservation and management principles to all rock art sites, each site should be assessed in terms of its own unique set of significance values, physical conditions, and history of visitation.
