| Abstract |
Several Wyoming pictograph and petroglyph sites are managed by federal and state agencies for public visitors. Recently Legend Rock, a large site north of Thermopolis , Wyoming , has become the focus for an innovative management plan. Wyoming State Parks, the lead agency for Legend Rock is working with the Bureau of Land Management, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center , the University of Wyoming , regional Indian Nations, local communities and interested individuals to develop the management of the site. Intensive photogrametric recording has been employed to document the petroglyph panels in three-dimensional images. Major archaeological excavations have been completed to assess the importance of the site deposits. A permit system for access and a summer intern to guide visitors through the site is an important component of the new management. One current consideration is the development of a virtual visit in museum exhibits (and possibly the internet) to bring the site to outsiders rather than outsiders to the site.
