Field Workshop Sessions
(Site Descriptions) |
| Option A – Boca Negra
Canyon: A 74-acre city-owned and managed canyon, Boca Negra is the only developed petroglyph viewing area in the monument. Three paved trails provide a backdrop to discuss: visitor use, development alternatives, educational opportunities and interpretation of petroglyph sites, and consultation with native peoples. (Some climbing with steps on paved trails; some shade and seating available). Restrooms available. |
| Option B –
Rinconada Canyon: Walk 2.5 miles (round trip) on a sandy trail into the canyon where over 3,500 petroglyphs have been documented. Discussion topics will focus on inventory methods, conservation techniques (remediation options), and preservation. No shade or seating is available. Restrooms available. |
| Option C –
Piedras Marcadas Canyon: Surrounded by urban development, the Piedras Marcadas Canyon has the most dense concentration of petroglyphs in the monument (over 5,000 images). A short flat ½ mile trail will leave residential development behind. Discussion topics will include urban threats (roads, adjacent development, recreational use, trails, storm drainage, and site watch opportunities). No shade or seating is available. Restrooms available. |
