Abingdon

Sightsee, visit the Barter Theatre, Virginia's state theatre, learn about Virginia's colonial settlement at the Wolf Hills Historic District. Walk or ride on a bicycle or horseback on the Virginia Creeper Trail, a former railroad line running back into the high mountains where Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina come together. Enjoy a variety of food and shopping in restored historic buildings.

William and Arthur Campbell assembled the Virginia militia in the area in late September of 1780. This is why Abingdon was chosen as the starting point of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail.

Virginia 75

Enjoy the marvelous views of the "knob" country along the South Holston River. The distinctive mountains on right and left look like the knobs on a giant backbone. To the east, the mountains rise over 5,000 feet. Nearby is Virginia's highest mountain, Mount Rogers at 5,026 feet.
