The trail may be followed from Abingdon Virginia, as described, or in reverse starting from Kings Mountain National Military Park.

From NC 9, follow a series of road changes that form a continuous route toward South Carolina 11: NC 1343, NC 1102, SC 58, SC 73. At SC 11, turn left and proceed east toward Chesnee. At the water tower just outside Chesnee, turn left on Tank Road (SC 101 and SC 146) and continue through a residential area and carefully across U.S. 221 to SC 144. Turn left on SC 146 and continue to a dead end at SC 11. Turn left on SC 11 and continue east past the Cowpens National Battlefield towards Gaffney. Cross over Interstate 85. Turn left at North Carolina 18 and proceed north toward Shelby. When NC 18 turns left to cross Interstate 85, continue straight ahead on South Carolina 329 to U.S. 29. Turn left and follow U.S. 29 north to South Carolina 30. Turn right and follow SC 30 to South Carolina 207. Turn right and continue past Cherokee Ford back to SC 30. Turn right and continue to South Carolina 5. Turn right and follow SC 5 to South Carolina 66. Turn left and follow SC 66 to South Carolina 21. Turn right and go past the Antioch Baptist Church to the junction with South Carolina 216. Go right and follow SC 216 into Kings Mountain National Military Park. Turn left into the Visitors Center where the trail ends.
