Most of the Commemorative Motor Route is on two-lane state or U.S. highways suitable for large vehicles, including RV, buses, and cars or trucks with trailers. There are limitations and special circumstances at specific facilities.
South Mountain State Park
Narrow gravel entrance road fords several steams
U.S. 64
In Morganton, the route runs through the city on urban streets. Outside Morganton, U.S. 64 is a two-lane highway with frequent hills and curves. Shoulders are narrow or nonexistent. In Rutherfdordton, the streets are narrow with several sharp turns.
N.C. 108
Outside of Rutherfordton, this road is also a rural, two-lane highway with steep hills and frequent curves.
N.C. 9
From Mill Springs to South Carolina, N.C. 9 and the connecting roads are two-lane, rural highways. Hills are common, although the road levels out south of Sandy Plain.
