South Mountain State Park

South of Morganton on N.C. 18, the park offers primitive camping, hiking, and horse back riding on the eastern side of the South Mountains. As seen from the trail on the west side, the South Mountains seem small and simple compared to the country down from Sycamore Shoals. Viewed from the park, the South Mountains are more majestic, more rugged. The road in is gravel, fording streams several times.

Crowders Mountain State Park

Just off Interstate 85 southwest of Charlotte, this park is on the northeast end of the Kings Mountain range. You'll easily spot Crowders Mountains rugged stone walls rising up from the piedmont. It appears to be the highest point on the range, but looks are deceiving. The summit lies between Crowders Mountain and the battle site, right along the North and South Carolina line.

Crowders Mountain offers primitive camping, climbing on the 150-foot cliffs, hiking, and nature study.
