From Elkin to Morganton (Wilkes-Surry Segment)
The trail may be followed from Elkin, as described, or in reverse starting from Kings Mountain National Military Park.
Begin in Elkin on North Carolina 268. Proceed west through North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro to U.S. 321 near Lenoir. Turn left and follow U.S. 321 to U.S. 321A. Turn right and follow U.S. 321A south to the North Carolina 18 bypass in Lenoir. Turn right and follow North Carolina 18 south to Morganton. At Sanford Drive, turn right. Follow Sanford Drive to North Carolina 181. At NC 181, turn left onto U.S. 64 and NC 181 to join the main route on U.S. 64.
