OVERMOUNTAIN VICTORY NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL
Large Vehicle Access in North Carolina
From Tennessee Line to Morganton
Horizontal Rule

Most of the Commemorative Motor Route is on two-lane state or U.S. highways suitable for large vehicles, including RV, buses, and cars or trucks with trailers. There are limitations and special circumstances at specific facilities.

U.S. 19E

Two-lane, winding mountain road with some steep grades and sharp curves from the Tennessee line to Spruce Pine. Because of its high elevation, this road may be snow-covered in winter when lower elevations are receiving only rain.

North Carolina 226

Truckers are required to stop at an information area just before the Blue Ridge Parkway at the top of the grade. An alternate truck route is available on N.C. 194 through Newland to U.S. 221 to the base of the mountain.

From the Blue Ridge Parkway down to the junction with U.S. 221, this is a narrow, steep, winding mountain road. This mountain downgrade is dangerous. There is one runaway truck ramp near the midpoint. The alternate route down (NC 226A through Little Switzerland) is similar without the runaway truck ramp.

U.S. 70

This is a winding, two-lane highway with steep hills and sharp curves.

North Carolina 126
