Except as noted, these trails are suitable for the average walker from teens to 70's. Unless noted, trails are open to joggers and walkers. Where noted, handicapped access is provided.

U.S. Forest Service, Roan Mountain-Carver's Gap

On the boundary between Tennessee and North Carolina, offers rugged mountain trails, famous rhododendron gardens at Carver's Gap

Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through area and crosses historic trail route in Yellow Mountain Gap. From Yellow Mountain Gap, follow blue-blazed side trail west down to Roan Mountain State Park or east down along Roaring Creek into North Toe River valley, passing Overmountain men's camping site second night of march from Sycamore Shoals.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Museum of North Carolina Minerals:

Dirt and gravel road, gravel road portion suitable for wheel chairs

Start at trail head across North Carolina 226 from parking lot. Proceed north on trail parallel to parkway. Cross parkway and follow dirt and gravel road past orchard to McKimmey Gap. Cross under parkway and enter woods trail to Heffner Gap parking lot on parkway. Return by same route.

Linville Falls

Gravel path to overlooks of rugged falls tumbling down into the gorge

Linville Gorge

Rugged trail into the primitive area of the gorge with rock-hopping along river in gorge. Limited numbers, requires permit.

Mount Mitchell

Both moderate and rugged mountain trails around slopes of East's highest mountain.
